How to start the year off on the right foot?

As the year draws to an end, I feel the need to reflect on the past year. What has 2019 brought me? How does this year fit into my life path? What do I wish for 2020?

The year 2019 was full of challenges, disappointments but also surprises. This year I learned a lot. Especially from my failures but also from my joys. I learned how to choose myself. To let go despite the « what will people say ». I learned to listen to myself. I learned to let people who were not right for me out of my life.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned this year is that you have a choice. The choice to get people out of our lives who aren’t healthy for us or even just not good for us. We have the choice at every moment to stay true to ourselves. To ask ourselves what is really important to us and to prioritize it.

For the year 2020, I wish myself many things. But the only goal that really matters to me is to choose myself every day. To put my well-being, what I need and want before what I think others expect from me. This could be confused with selfishness, but it’s not. It is precisely by clearly expressing one’s desires and needs to oneself and others that one becomes a better person not only for oneself but also for others. By pursuing one’s desires and needs, one avoids frustration, one stops having expectations that are not fulfilled because one has not expressed them. No one is able to read our thoughts because even for ourselves it is difficult to find our way around.

I invite you too to reflect on your year. But above all to project yourself into the year 2020 and ask yourself what you want to accomplish. Let’s stop with resolutions that are impossible in the long term, prefer instead a short list of objectives that you really want to achieve. Don’t hesitate to write down how you want to reach these objectives, what help you are going to ask for, on what horizon you are going to reach them…

I use a vision board to visualize my goals for this new year. I write down my objectives and insert a photo that corresponds to the objectives I want to achieve. So every time I look at my vision board, I can directly see my goals for the year. For example, one of my goals for 2020 is to go on a big trip, so I’ve inserted in my vision board pictures of places I would like to visit. It’s as simple as that: write, paste, insert and that’s it.

Remember: no matter what you’ve been through, the best is yet to come this year. And the years after that.
